Why the best Employees are Volunteers (II)
At the core of what humans can do and be is how they feel about themselves. Winners win, productive people are productive, effective people are effective. What we do is heavily connected to how we see ourselves. Organizations that will lead in the new age are the ones who master the art of creating environments that speak to people’s identities.
Create an environment where people feel good about themselves
The people who want to be somewhere don’t give the same output as people who have to be somewhere. There is a difference. Create an environment people want to be in and they’ll give you their best.
Create systems to enable people not to lock them in
“Technology is nothing. What’s important is that you have a faith in people, that they’re basically good and smart, and if you give them tools, they’ll do wonderful things with them.” — Steve Jobs
When the focus is first on people, then the purpose for every other thing falls in place. Technology becomes about advancing human potential. Systems we create within our organizations become advocates of human potential because what we have faith in is the people, that when you give them enablers, they’ll do great things.
Give them something to believe in
When people can’t see themselves in the big picture, they can’t give their best in creating it. You must help your people see how their part makes the whole.
